Mariota was expected to backup Jalen Hurts this season after signing with the Eagles, but his preseason struggles paired with impressive play from Tanner McKee has put that in question. Mariota signed a deal worth $5 million with the Eagles this offseason.

Nick Sirianni said that QB Marcus Mariota is still the Philadelphia Eagles’ QB2 despite his shaky preseason outings, saying it’s “way too early” to call rookie Tanner McKee the backup QB.

Mariota through two preseason performances has completed 16 of his 28 pass attempts for 144 yards, no TDs and one interception in three quarters of action. The former Heisman winner started 13 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season, struggling to a 5-8 record that eventually saw him benched for then-rookie QB Desmond Ridder. Mariota is currently the Eagles’ QB2, but his track record in the NFL has been shaky. If McKee can continue to impress, this could change sooner rather than later, despite Sirianni’s sentiment.

Mariota flashed his dual-threat ability behind center for the Eagles Saturday, averaging 7.3 yards per carry on the day. The veteran signal-caller only offers any sort of fantasy value if superstar Jalen Hurts suffers an injury during the season however.

Mariota will join the Eagles as the backup to Jalen Hurts. With both quarterbacks having similar skill sets, Mariota is a perfect option to have in the event Hurts has to miss any time due to an injury. Mariota tallied 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 13 games with the Falcons in 2022.
