Jeff Mathis signed a minor league contract with the Braves on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact

Mathis will begin the 2021 season at the Braves' alternate training site. The 16-year major league veteran has carved out a career based almost exclusively on his defense and ability to call games behind the plate. Because he offers very little offensive value, Mathis has never been much of a fantasy asset. There would likely have to be multiple injuries for Mathis to see time in the majors this year, as Travis d'Arnaud, Alex Jackson, and William Contreras will all be ahead of him on the depth chart. David O'Brien also reported that Mathis is looking to transition to coaching, so this may be his final stop before retirement.

Mathis struggled with the Rangers in 2020 when he slashed a paltry .161/.221/.355 with three home runs and nine RBI across 62 at-bats. The 37-year-old will compete for a backup job in spring training.
